PROPHETIC INSIGHT
What is the Prophetic?
For many centuries many people and indeed the churches have confused
working in
the prophetic and being a prophet.
As a result of this unfortunate confusion, many anointed children of God
have either shied away from prophecy or have treated it with suspicion or
even with contempt.
Have you ever wondered why Paul in 1st Corinthians 14:1, enjoined us to
“To pursue love and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy? ”
Just as every one of us must not necessarily be an evangelist to fulfil the great commission, so must every Christian not be prophet to prophesy.
Perspectives of prophecy
Prophecy can have three perspectives:
• Prophetic utterances in form of words or songs unto the Lord. Ex 15:20-21,
Hebrew 2:12, Rev 19:10
• Holy Spirit inspired prophecy is meant to edify, exhort and correct the body
of Christ 1Cor. 12:10,Romans 12:6
• Speaking the rhema word for edification, direction, correction, con-firmation
and instruction unto righteousness. I Cor 14:29 ,2 Tim 3:3.16-17
Few Verses On True and False Prophecy
For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from
God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. 2 Peter 1:21
But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel: “‘And in the last days
it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your
sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions,
and your old men shall dream dreams; even on my male servants and female
servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy.
And I will show wonders in the
heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke;
the sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the day of the
Lord comes, the great and magnificent day. … Acts 2:16-21
“For the Lord God does nothing without revealing his secret to his servants the prophets. Amos 3:7
Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered
together to him, we ask you, brothers, not to be quickly shaken in mind or
alarmed, either by a spirit or a spoken word, or a letter seeming to be from us,
to the effect that the day of the Lord has come. Let no one deceive you in any way.
For that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, who opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in
the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God. 2 Thessalonians 2:1-4
On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people for their up
building and en-couragement and consolation. 1 Corinthians 14:3
But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false
teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even
denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift
destruction. And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the
way of truth will be blasphemed. And in their greed they will ex-ploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruc-tion is
not asleep. For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them
into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment; if he did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others, when he brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly; … 2 Peter 2:1-22
“And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your
sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams,
and your young men shall see visions. Even on the male and female servants
in those days I will pour out my Spir-it. “And I will show wonders in the heavens
and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke. The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes. And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those who
escape, as the Lord has said, and among the survivors shall be those whom
the Lord calls. Joel 2:28-32
