With continuous religious crisis and persecution of Christians and other minorities in Nigeria, Pakistan, Afghanistan it is worth looking at the role Sharia law plays in promoting Islamic fundamentalist and terrorism which is now a global phenomenon. This article was first posted on our old website in June 2012, but I have endeavoured to repost it in order to enable readers to understand the rationale behind the post “Ban Sharia Law in the United Kingdom: A Time Bomb”

Sharia law is Islam’s legal system. It is derived from both the Koran, as the word of God, the example of the life of the prophet Muhammad, and fatwas – the rulings of Islamic scholars
Saria Law and the state
Secularists believe that the law of the state should be based on secular principles, not on Islamic legal theory. Traditionalists believe that the law of the state should be based on the traditional legal schools. However, traditional legal views are considered unacceptable by some modern Muslims, especially in areas like women’s rights or slavery. Reformers believe that new Islamic legal theories can produce modernized Islamic law and lead to acceptable opinions in areas such as women’s rights. Sharia law does not recognise any other law
Punishment
In accordance with the Qur’an and several Hadith, theft is punished by imprisonment or amputation of hands or feet, depending on the number of times it was committed and depending on the item of theft accordance with Hadith, stoning to death is the penalty for married men and women who commit adultery. What about the men? For unmarried men and women, the punishment prescribed in the Qur’an and Hadith is 100 lashes
Sharia and Persecution
Saudi Arabia, April 24, 1998, According to Amnesty International’s “Behind Closed Doors” report on Saudi Arabia released in November 1997, “… the inhabitants of Saudi Arabia remain denied the most basic human rights, while the government spares no effort to conceal its appalling human rights record from public scrutiny.” The report noted that Saudi’s religious police, the Mutawa’een, are “invested with the authority to arrest and detain, particularly with regard to Christian worshippers.
The case of Afghanistan
Under Sharia in Afghanistan, women are not allowed to work in any field except the medical sector. The Islamic law of Afghanistan does not allow the employment of women in government departments or international agencies. Women should not go outside their residences with the exception of those working in the medical sector. The Taliban’s so-called religious police arrested two young women on August 3, reportedly “caught red-handed” after showing a film about Christianity to an Afghan family, the Taliban said.”
Islamic Law and Non-Muslims
Islamic Sharia law means that all non-Muslims are inferior in law and society will restrict the movement of women and non-Muslims. Just like what happened in Sudan when policies of Islamization and Arabization were enforced on Africans in this nation. In general, the fate of non-Muslims is forceful conversion, enslavement or death.
Sharia Law in Nigeria
It was partially implement as personal law for Muslims in the North. Since its full introduction in 1999, religious, ethnic and political unrest have recently triggered violence in Nigeria. The country’s Moslem and Christian communities have clashed over the proposed introduction of the Sharia Islamic law. Over the past 15 years hundreds have died during the fighting in Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Jigawa, Kano, Kastina, Kaduna, Kebbi, Niger, Sokoto, and Yobe.
Following the instruction of Sharia Law in Nigeria, a group called “Boko Haram” (“education is sin”), which has been campaigning for the imposition of Sharia (Islamic law) on the 36 states of the Nigerian federation, was said to have sparked off the crisis when its members launched an attack on the station.

Sharia Law in Britain
Sharia has been operating in Britain, in parallel to the British legal system, since 1982. Work includes issuing fatwas – religious rulings on matters ranging from why Islam considers homosexuality a sin to why two women are equivalent to one male witness in an Islamic court. However, investigation has revealed that Sharia is being used informally within the Muslim community to tackle crime such as gang fights or stabbings, bypassing police and the British court system.
CBN has reported the existence of some 85 Sharia courts now operating in Britain, with Islamic judges ruling on cases ranging from financial to marital disputes among British Muslims. The courts have popped up in several British cities with large Muslim populations, including Birmingham, Bradford, Manchester, and London. The Tower Hamlets section of East London is arguably the epicenter of the Sharia movement in Great Britain.
The Archbishop of Canterbury says the adoption of certain aspects of Sharia law in the UK “seems unavoidable”. He argues that adopting parts of Islamic Sharia law would help maintain social cohesion. Dr Williams noted that Orthodox Jewish courts already operated, and that the law accommodated the anti-abortion views of some Christians.
A Muslim Labour MP predicts Total Islamification of Britain Within 30 Years as for those clamoruing for the implementation of Sharia law: “Because nothing else matters. Because Islam must dominate and not be dominated. Because every Muslim is a soldier of Allah who is religiously obliged to make the world Islamic. Muslims do not invade Western countries to become Westerners, Muslims arrive on our shores to make US Islamic.
“Speaking to The Sunday Telegraph, Jim Fitzpatrick, the Environment Minister, said the IFE had become, in effect, a secret party within Labour and other political parties.
“They are acting almost as an centrist organization, placing people within the political parties, recruiting members to those political parties, trying to get individuals selected and elected so they can exercise political influence and power, whether it’s at local government level or national level,” he said.”
However, a Labour Muslim minister has warned that Islamic law is too unsophisticated for Britain. Sadiq Khan said women could be ‘ abused’ by Sharia courts, which may give unequal bargaining power to the sexes. According to him, “The burden is on those who want to open up these courts to persuade us why they should.’ Mr Khan, who was made a community cohesion minister in Labour government in 2008, rejected the argument that the courts could operate in the same way as the Jewish Beth Din courts.

 Radicalisation of young British
 More terrorist attacks
 Taking over and private and public sectors

What shall Christians do?
As watchmen and women, intercessors, apostles and prophets we have a duty to do the following.
 Embark on Intercessory prayer: vigils and prayer matches and walks
 Carry out effective evangelism
 Raising awareness
 Prophesying to the situation
 Reconciliation
